The Equity Symposium is an opportunity to learn from each other with a focus on racial equity. Our colleagues from Highline and beyond will present on a range of topics to challenge us to deepen our capacity for equity.
All staff will attend two sessions:
An All-Staff Anti-Bias Training
Additionally, staff will select an Elective session
Using the framework provided by Louise Derman-Sparks and Julie Olsen Edwards' book Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves, participate in an experience that engages young children with equity in the classroom. Participants will be introduced to the four goals of Anti-Bias education and try on strategies and application for their own classrooms. Students in Early Childhood programs are in a critical stage of racial identity development. Our presentation will explore how racial identity develops in young children, how to help children to display pride in their racial identity, steps to encourage children to express comfort with racial diversity, how to teach children to recognize unfairness, and how we can give children the skills to act on unfairness.
